Stantec is hunting for a heavy-hitting Mechanical Designer to grind out MEP models for large-scale commercial builds out of their Tampa hub. This isn’t abstract engineering; this is the tactical execution of fitting massive HVAC and plumbing systems into shrinking architectural ceiling plenums. You are the drafter operating at the tip of the spear, responsible for ensuring the engineer’s theoretical load calculations actually fit inside the physical structure without triggering a barrage of costly Change Orders from the general contractor in the field.

Constructability & Spatial Warfare

MEP design is fundamentally a war over spatial constraints. The architectural team wants high ceilings, the structural team needs massive steel beams, and you have to route miles of ductwork and piping through whatever space is left. You will live inside Revit MEP and Navisworks, fighting spatial clashes before the design reaches the construction phase. Executing this engineering and operations mandate “without over-engineering” means you must balance ASHRAE standards with ruthless value engineering to keep sheet metal and piping fabrication costs from blowing the client’s budget.

BIM Execution & Clash Resolution

  • BIM Clash Eradication: Aggressively run Navisworks collision checks. If you let a 12-inch chilled water pipe intersect a structural column in your model, the field fix will cost thousands and delay the schedule. You fix it in the model first.
  • Constructible Routing: Model HVAC ductwork and plumbing layouts that sheet metal workers and pipefitters can actually install in the real world, factoring in insulation thickness, hanger clearance, and gravity slopes.
  • Load & Sizing Execution: Support the Professional Engineers (PE) by running raw heating/cooling load calculations and ensuring equipment schedules reflect machinery that can actually fit through the mechanical room doors.
  • Code Defense: Enforce the Florida Building Code and NFPA regulations to ensure the permit set survives municipal review without dozens of redline comments.
  • Procurement Documentation: Generate accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) so the procurement team isn’t ordering 500 feet of excess copper piping.

Technical Muscle & Prerequisites

  • Revit & Navisworks Mastery: 3+ years of heavy, professional Revit MEP experience. You must be able to manipulate complex central models and worksets without crashing the network or breaking other disciplines’ models.
  • Constructability Acumen: You need to know the turning radius of large ductwork and how gravity plumbing actually behaves. If your pipe routes ignore physics, your model is useless to the contractor.
  • Code Literacy: Deep, practical familiarity with ASHRAE standards and local Florida mechanical codes.

Compensation & Hardware Infrastructure

Working remotely on massive BIM models requires serious hardware and a reliable financial baseline.

  • Base Compensation: $75,000 – $95,000 USD / Year. A solid baseline, made highly efficient if you are capitalizing on Florida’s lack of state income tax.
  • The Hardware Stipend: Heavy BIM workloads will melt a standard laptop. The home office stipend is critical—you will use it to build a workstation with the massive RAM and dedicated GPU required to render Navisworks clash models remotely without lag.
  • Engineering Pathway: Direct support and tuition reimbursement to push your career toward a full PE license or a Senior BIM Management track.
  • Corporate Safety Net: Comprehensive health benefits, PTO, and 401(k) matching to provide stability between project deadlines.

Deployment Logistics & The Field Mandate

The “Florida Preferred” Reality
Location: Remote (Tampa Hub). Status: Fully Remote. However, they prefer Florida residents for a very specific operational reason: when the physical build hits a snag and the general contractor claims the model is unbuildable, you will be expected to drive to the site, put on a hardhat, and resolve the conflict in the field.
Relocation Posture
Zero relocation assistance. You are expected to set up your home rig and start pushing models immediately.
