This is not the kind of HR that plans corporate retreats. JPMorgan Chase is seeking a strategic HR Business Partner (HRBP) to embed directly into their Corporate & Investment Bank (CIB) in Manhattan. This is a high-stakes human resources and strategy mandate. You will operate as the operational consigliere to highly demanding Managing Directors (MDs), tasked with managing the brutal realities of investment bank talent pipelines, high-stakes compensation battles, and rapid organizational restructuring.

The Strategic Mandate & Executive Friction

Investment banking runs on extreme productivity and massive bonus pools. Your role as an HRBP is to ensure that human capital is deployed as efficiently as financial capital. You must possess the executive presence to tell an MD that their top-producing trader cannot be promoted due to a toxic behavioral history. You will actively manage the tension between aggressive revenue generation and strict institutional compliance, ensuring the bank’s workforce structure is mathematically optimized and legally sound.

Compensation Control & Talent Execution

  • The Compensation Crucible: You are the architect behind the brutal year-end compensation cycle. You must force MDs to differentiate talent, using hard data to justify bonus allocations and prevent massive flight risk among top performers.
  • High-Stakes Employee Relations: When a high-earning executive is accused of a policy violation, you run the investigation. You must coordinate closely with Employment Counsel to mitigate catastrophic legal exposure or public relations damage to the firm.
  • Restructuring & RIFs: When market conditions turn, you execute the layoffs (Reduction in Force). You will design the restructuring models and coach leaders on how to legally and professionally terminate staff.
  • The 9-Box Grid: Force objective talent reviews. You must challenge leaders who protect underperformers, ensuring that only the most capable talent ascends to the VP and Executive Director levels.

Executive Polish & Analytical Muscle

  • The Corporate Scar Tissue: 7+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 3 years explicitly functioning as an HRBP in a ruthless, matrixed environment (tier-one finance, tech, or consulting).
  • Spreadsheet Combat: If you cannot run complex VLOOKUPs and pivot tables in Excel to model multi-million dollar compensation scenarios, you will fail the interview. You must be deeply operational in Workday.
  • Executive Spine: The ability to push back on highly aggressive, high-revenue executives using data, logic, and policy. If you fold under pressure, you lose your credibility on the floor instantly.
  • Compliance Literacy: Deep, actionable knowledge of unforgiving NY State and NYC employment laws, navigating the intersection of HR policy and basic FINRA compliance for registered reps.

Manhattan Economics & The Banking Multiplier

The base salary is strong, but the true financial leverage in investment banking HR comes from the bonus structure.

  • Base Compensation: $135,000 – $165,000 USD / Year. A highly competitive baseline for the NYC market, requiring strategic negotiation based on your specific financial services pedigree.
