AT&T is deploying a Fiber Network Designer to architect the broadband infrastructure of Northeast Florida. This is not a high-level conceptual role; it is a high-stakes telecommunications and engineering mandate. You are the digital architect of the physical layer. You are responsible for every splice point, every right-of-way permit, and every foot of cable in an Outside Plant (OSP) environment where a single mapping error or NESC code violation can delay a multi-million dollar construction rollout for months.
OSP Engineering & Spatial Liability
Building a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network requires absolute spatial precision. Your objective is to navigate the “invisible” war for space in the municipal right-of-way. You must synthesize messy field notes, existing utility records, and complex property boundaries into flawless, clash-free blueprints. You are the bridge between a theoretical GPON architecture and the physical reality of aerial pole attachments and underground boring. If your design doesn’t work in the field, the construction crews stop, and the burn rate on materials and labor spikes instantly.
Architecture Execution & Permitting Triage
- OSP Network Synthesis: Design the end-to-end fiber path. You must architect aerial, buried, and underground cable routes that minimize physical obstacles while maximizing network reach and scalability.
- GIS & Blueprint Authority: Generate the high-fidelity engineering prints and the Bill of Materials (BOM). Your output must be accurate enough for a construction crew to build without constant clarification.
- Permit & Right-of-Way Navigation: Analyze legal boundaries and utility maps to route fiber paths that bypass legal conflicts. You must ensure every design satisfies the municipal permit requirements of the Jacksonville market.
- Splice & Distribution Logic: Engineer highly efficient splice plans and distribution hubs. You are responsible for optimizing the physical hardware to minimize material waste and prevent “dark fiber” inefficiencies.
- Cross-Functional Troubleshooting: Act as the remote technical anchor for field technicians. When they encounter an unmapped utility in the trench, you must redesign the path in real-time to keep the project moving.
Technical Muscle & Regulatory Prerequisites
- Spatial Software Mastery: 3+ years of verifiable experience with industry-standard GIS and CAD tools (ArcGIS, 3-GIS, SpatialNET, or OSPInsight). You must be able to manipulate complex spatial data layers without corrupting the master database.
- The NESC Standard: Deep, practical knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) standards. Your designs carry the legal and physical liability for safety and compliance in the public right-of-way.
- Telecom Infrastructure Literacy: Proven experience with GPON, FTTH, and FTTx deployment architectures. You must understand the physics of fiber—from the central office to the home terminal.
- Data Deconfliction: Advanced ability to interpret conflicting data points—field survey notes versus legacy utility maps—to produce error-free construction prints.
The Remote Calculus & Career Equity
This role offers a unique professional trade-off: high-level institutional resources paired with total geographic autonomy.
- Base Compensation: $75,000 – $95,000 USD / Year. A solid engineering baseline, made highly efficient by the 100% remote nature of the role.
- The Remote Multiplier: You are designing Florida infrastructure but can execute from anywhere in the U.S., allowing you to optimize your cost of living while earning a tier-1 telecom salary.
- Enterprise Training & Growth: Gain direct experience with AT&T’s proprietary network planning systems, acting as a springboard into Senior OSP Engineering or Network Planning Management roles.
- Corporate Safety Net: Comprehensive medical coverage, a competitive 401(k) match, and substantial employee discounts on the services you help build.
Design Logistics & Remote Architecture
- The Digital Workspace
- Location: Remote (Jacksonville Market focus). Status: 100% Remote. While the physical network is in Northeast Florida, your work is performed exclusively within GIS platforms and CAD software through secure enterprise access. No field visits are required for this designer-specific mandate.
- Relocation Posture
- Not applicable. The role is authorize for remote execution from any domestic location with high-speed internet (which you will likely be helping to build).
